Nescit Cedere
He does not know how to give up.
Never Give Up, Never Surrender! James Oglethorpe’s family motto, Nescit Cedere, translates from Latin as 'He does not know how to give up.' This steadfast determination was embodied by Oglethorpe in his successful efforts to establish the Georgia colony and then defend against political opposition, financial hardship, and logistical challenges that the nascent colony faced. Our members of the James Oglethorpe Society strive to honor that same spirit of perseverance and resolve in the face of the challenges that we contest today. In an age of instant gratification and fleeting resolve, diminished attention spans and easy solutions, we must attune ourselves to this ethos to fight; Against the crisis of competency, the destruction of our Nation, and the ever present pessimism of the age.
This motto is more than an historical artifact; it is a guiding principle and an ethos for the spirit that we cultivate. This legacy of tenacity will continue to thrive through this brotherhood of men in the State of Georgia.
Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation. The James Oglethorpe Society is pleased to announce their establishment in Atlanta, Georgia. Our Motto is Nescit Cedere: He does not know how to give up.
